Sustainable shopping in Rotterdam: fashion, home and food

Rotterdam is the perfect city for a shopping trip. It’s small enough to reach most places by foot or bike. It exudes a modern vibe and showcases some pretty cool (and weird) architecture. But finding sustainable shops amongst the high street is not the easiest in Rotterdam yet, as most shops are a little out of the city centre. Simone, the assistant shop manager in our Rotterdam store, is here to help you out. Hop on the tram or grab yourself an OV fiets and go!

Sue Bakery
Goudsesingel 330

First things first: coffee and cake. Every health foodie with a sweet tooth in Rotterdam knows Sue - zoet zonder suiker. Everything they serve is refined sugar free, gluten free and vegan! Sue has two shops, and Sue Bakery is the place to go for all day breakfast, coffee and sweets. It’s just a short bike/tram ride away from Central Station, so the perfect start of your day!

Rotterdamse Oogst market

Rotterdamse Oogst market
Noordplein, every Saturday 10:00 - 17:00

Visiting on a Saturday? Make sure to hop on your bike to Rotterdamse Oogst market. Located on Noordplein, it’s a little out of the city centre, but worth the visit. Only local, artisan and/or organic vendors sell the tastiest foods, like bread, (vegan) cheeses, veggies, olive oil, jams and other deli food. Bring your own bag and zero waste food bags, they’ll happily fill them for you!

Regina Rotterdam
Zwaanshals 325C

Close to Rotterdamse Oogst is the newly opened Regina, a local deli run by Anna. She makes all delicacies herself, from empanadas to cakes and ice teas to shrubs. You’ll also find beautiful artisan and vintage kitchen and home goods here.

Volle Kast
Zwaanshals 329A

Next to Regina you’ll find Volle Kast, a shop for second hand designer clothes for women and kids. Everything is in mint condition. Think of brands like Isabel Marant, Malene Birger, Vanessa Bruno and many others for a fraction of the original price. Reuse!

Get on your bike and go back where you came from, because there you’ll find lunch.

spirit restaurant rotterdamSpirit
Mariniersweg 9

A buffet restaurant doesn’t sound very appealing, but wait ‘till you visit Spirit. All dishes are vegetarian or vegan, 100% organic and served fresh every day in modern interior and terrace under the trees. Before you know, you’ve plated more than you can eat, because everything looks tasty (and it is). No wonder it’s always busy from breakfast to dinner time.

Spirit is located in De Groene Passage, an organic and fairtrade mini mall, with supermarket Gimsel (bulk bins!), Wereldwinkel, interior store VanBinnen and more. Make sure to drop by!

Studio JUX Rotterdam - Sustainable Fashion Store

Studio JUX
Meent 24

Of course we had to include Studio JUX here. At our store you’ll find a mix of brands, not just our own. From fashion for women, men and kids to home goods and zero waste supplies. Think of brands like Mud Jeans, Veja, ArmedAngels, Organic Basics and A Beautiful Story. All of our own products are mainly produced in our factory in Nepal, where we do our absolute best to combine our love for fashion with a rightful respect for people and the environment.

bellamy gallery

Bellamy Gallery
Pannekoekstraat 60A

On the Pannekoekstraat you’ll find many small independent fashion shops, so do check those out. If you want to make sure the origin of your clothes is aye-okay (which we recommend, of course), drop by Bellamy Gallery! Dutch label Bellamy Gallery offers quality basics that last. They produce everything in European factories with proper working conditions for the makers.

Get touristy and go to the Kubus houses for some funky architecture and then the Markthal if you like food (who doesn’t?). Continue on to the Coolsingel to the newly renovated bookstore Donner and get lost for an hour (or two) if you have the time. After that, make sure to go to the Oude Binnenweg.

Collectiv. by SWAN
Oude Binnenweg 137

What started as a monthly lifestyle market in Rotterdam - Swan Market - has now grown to a concept store full of accessories, home goods and gifts by creatives and small businesses. From handmade to vintage and unique artisan pieces to local small batch goods, you’ll find it at Collectiv. By SWAN

Maasboulevard 102

Time for drinks and dinner? We recommend you get back on your bike again and go to Aloha low waste foodbar. It’s located on the Maas river (great view of the Erasmus bridge) and in the former Tropicana swimming pool - you’ll still find remnants of slides and pools. Go here for local, seasonal dishes, all with the aim to make as little waste as possible.
